South Africa Mourns the Loss of Tito Mboweni: Trailblazing Leader and EconomicSteward Dies at 65

Tito Mboweni, South Africa’s former Finance Minister and Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, passed away on October 13, 2024, at the age of 65, after a short illness. President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his condolences, stating that Mboweni’s passing came as a shock, given his energetic and affable nature

Mboweni’s remarkable career spanned multiple roles. He served as the country’s first Minister of Labour under President Nelson Mandela from 1994 to 1999, shaping South Africa’s labour policies during a critical transition period. As Governor of the South African Reserve Bank from 1999 to 2009, he ensured the country’s economic stability during turbulent times.

His leadership extended beyond government. Mboweni chaired the Tourism Business Council of South Africa and led the board of AngloGold Ashanti ². He was also an international advisor to Goldman Sachs and non-executive chairman of Nampak Limited.

Tributes poured in from various quarters. The South African Revenue Service praised Mboweni’s integral role in maintaining macroeconomic stability. The Economic Freedom Fighters, despite disagreements on economic policy, acknowledged his openness to robust debate. Even the tinned fish company Lucky Star mourned his passing, thanking him for promoting their products through his social media cooking endeavors.

Mboweni’s legacy is a testament to his dedication to South Africa’s growth and development. As President Ramaphosa aptly put it, “We have lost a leader and compatriot who has served our nation as an activist, economic policy innovator and champion of labour rights”
