Greater Protea Glen Transport Master Plan Named Finalist in Prestigious SAICE National Awards

The Greater Protea Glen Transport Master Plan has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2026 South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) National Awards Project Awards, recognising its significant contribution to the country’s built environment.

The comprehensive plan, commissioned by the City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department and implemented through the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), aims to transform transport into a community-enabling service by strengthening connections between residents and essential services including jobs, schools, healthcare facilities, public amenities, and economic opportunities.

Executive Director of Transport Lutando Maboza emphasised the urgency of proactive planning, stating: “Greater Protea Glen is continuing to grow, and that growth requires us to think beyond the transport challenges residents experience today.” He added that the master plan focuses on improving mobility and connectivity while supporting the daily needs of communities.

The plan proposes an integrated transport network designed to bring roads, rail, Rea Vaya, Metrobus, minibus taxis, and non-motorised transport routes into more effective coordination.

JDA CEO Themba Mathibe highlighted the importance of understanding communities before construction begins: “Infrastructure begins long before construction starts. It begins with understanding how people live, where they need to go and how a community is expected to grow.”

The development of the master plan was backed by extensive technical research, including traffic counts at 45 intersections, pedestrian and cyclist counts, road condition surveys, public transport observations, transport modelling, site assessments, and stakeholder engagement.

The project was executed in partnership with OAR Consultants. Managing Director Avi Menon welcomed the recognition, expressing pride in his team’s work and thanking both the City of Johannesburg and the JDA for entrusting the consultancy with the project.

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Sandton on 3 September 2026.
