Motorist Arrested for Driving Under The Influence of Alcohol

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) continues to execute high-visibility operations, roadblocks, and routine patrols across all operational sectors in the City of Johannesburg to maintain law and order, curb reckless behaviour, and safeguard road users.

Driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the primary contributors to serious and fatal traffic accidents on the roads.

Between Monday, 07 September 2026, and Sunday, 13 September 2026, JMPD officers arrested a total of 202 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol across the city’s various regions, specialised units, and Alcohol Evidence Centres (AEC).

The JMPD views the figure of 202 arrests in a single week with serious concern. It underscores that despite ongoing public awareness campaigns and high-visibility enforcement, many road users still choose to disregard traffic regulations and put innocent lives at risk.

The JMPD maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding drunk driving. Every arrest represents a potential collision prevented and lives saved.

All arrested suspects face formal charges under Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996. Detained individuals will be processed through local South African Police Service (SAPS) holding facilities before appearing in court.

Motorists planning to consume alcohol must arrange alternative transport by designating a sober driver, utilising e-hailing services, or using public transport.

The JMPD will maintain its 24/7 presence across major routes, hotspots, and arterial roads to ensure full compliance with the law.
