PEU to Celebrate 120 Years of Educator Unity at Klerksdorp Extravaganza
The Professional Educators’ Union (PEU) will mark a major milestone in its history this month as educators from across South Africa gather in Klerksdorp for the union’s 120 Years Extravaganza.
The celebration is scheduled for 19 September 2026 at Milner High School, starting at 09:00, and is expected to bring together PEU members and their families from all nine provinces.
The annual event will combine sport, culture, entertainment and professional engagement, continuing a tradition that dates back to the organisation’s earlier years under the name TUATA.
Among the activities planned are soccer, netball, volleyball, darts, pool and chess, alongside music and cultural performances. Members will also take part in the Mr and Mrs PEU pageant, while traditional clothing will form part of the cultural celebrations.
An Education Symposium will provide a platform for educators to discuss developments and challenges affecting the education sector.
For PEU, the 120-year milestone is also an opportunity to reflect on its role in representing educators and advocating for their rights, dignity and interests.
The union says professional development remains an important part of its work, with educators needing both strong workplace representation and opportunities to advance their careers.
Looking ahead, PEU says it must continue adapting to changes in education, including the growing influence of technology and digital transformation. The organisation also wants to strengthen its engagement with younger educators to ensure its work remains relevant to the next generation of teachers.
However, the anniversary celebration comes at a time when educators continue to face serious challenges, particularly concerns around violence and safety in schools.
PEU maintains that creating safe working environments for teachers must remain a priority as South Africa considers the future of its education system.
The Klerksdorp gathering will therefore serve both as a celebration of the union’s 120-year legacy and a platform to consider the road ahead.
With members from across the country expected to participate, the Extravaganza will showcase the diversity and collective strength of the PEU community while reaffirming the importance of unity among educators.
