South Africa Mourns the Loss of Dr. Simon “SD” Gumbi, Revered Ukhozi FM Broadcaster

South Africa’s Christian community and gospel music industry are in deep mourning following the death of Dr. Simon “SD” Gumbi, a renowned evangelist and former Ukhozi FM presenter. Dr. Gumbi passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025, at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness.
Dr. Gumbi was widely known and loved for his passionate sermons and his iconic phrase “Usekhona uAmen.” He ministered to millions through his popular Sunday night show on Ukhozi FM, Unkulunkulu Nomuntu Omusha, where his powerful messages touched the hearts of countless listeners.
His family confirmed his passing via a live video on his official Facebook page. In the announcement, his son, Pastor Nhlapo, shared the somber news: “I am saddened to notify and announce officially from the family that the general of our time, Dr. Moyeni Simon Gumbi, has gone to be with the Lord this evening on the 14th of July 2025 after a long illness.” Pastor Nhlapo also added, “We are serving a living God. He has given us a wonderful Jesus; we are so grateful that the man of God has died in the Lord. He has fought a good fight.” The family has requested prayers and support during this difficult time and will share details regarding memorial service arrangements in due course.
Tributes have poured in from prominent figures across South Africa, reflecting the profound impact Dr. Gumbi had on so many lives. Former EFF official Mbuyiseni Ndlozi expressed his grief on social media, saying, “I have received the most devastating news. Dr SD Gumbi has passed on. Death is so greedy, though. My heart is shattered. And yet, he will insist that he has gone to be with the Lord. May his loving wife be comforted, as well as his children and close relatives. Above all, the whole body of Christ. Usehambile uAmen.”
The acclaimed gospel music group Joyous Celebration also paid tribute to Dr. Gumbi, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Pastor Dr SD Gumbi, a true giant of faith, a passionate evangelist, and a father to many in ministry. He has fought a good fight; he has finished the race; he has kept the faith.”
Gospel legend Sipho Makhabane described Gumbi as “more than just a colleague,” adding, “I’ve lost a father, a brother, and a mentor in the gospel fraternity. He always made an effort to make someone’s life better. My heartfelt condolences to his family.” Award-winning gospel singer Rebecca Malope reflected on Gumbi’s spiritual impact, saying, “May his soul rest in peace. He has done the Lord’s work and he was trusted by the Lord in his duty. Wherever he is, the angels are embracing him. It’s a great loss to us, the gospel fraternity at large.”
Dr. Gumbi’s influence extended beyond radio and the pulpit. He co-founded and served as a senior pastor and executive member of the Assemblies of God in South Africa. He also led the award-winning S.O.S Choir since 1984, with their hit album Hamba Mzalwane achieving platinum status. His ministry also included marriage counseling, public speaking, and mentoring young preachers.
Dr. Simon “SD” Gumbi’s legacy as a spiritual leader, broadcaster, and gospel musician will continue to inspire and uplift the South African Christian community for generations to come.
