Gauteng police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The incident occurred in the hospital’s parking area on Wednesday evening, October 1, 2025. According to reports, the victim had been visiting a friend at the medical facility. Upon returning to his vehicle, he was attacked and shot multiple times. Emergency services were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

The South African Police Service has launched a murder investigation into the shooting. Police spokesperson Captain Tinswalo Sibeko confirmed that authorities are working to determine the motive behind the attack. As of now, no arrests have been made. “The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the motive is still unknown,” Captain Sibeko stated.

Initial reports suggest the shooting may have been a targeted attack. Anti-crime activist and journalist Yusuf Abramjee described the incident as a possible “hit” in a post on X. The multiple gunshots and the location of the attack have led investigators to consider the possibility that the victim was specifically targeted.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing concerns about crime levels in Gauteng and South Africa as a whole. While some crime categories have shown a decrease, violent crimes, including murder and armed robbery, remain a significant issue. Johannesburg consistently ranks among the cities with the highest crime rates globally. Gauteng is a major contributor to the country’s crime statistics, accounting for a significant percentage of armed robberies and kidnappings. South Africa continues to have a high murder rate, with approximately 64 murders occurring daily.

There has been a concerning increase in targeted killings in South Africa. A report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime highlighted a substantial rise in such incidents over the past decade. These killings often involve organized crime, political motivations, or taxi-related conflicts.

As the investigation into the Milpark Hospital shooting continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist with their inquiries. The SAPS is committed to thoroughly investigating the incident and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
