The community of Alexandra is in mourning following the death of Vincent “Vinny” Ndima, a well-known businessman and community leader, who was killed in a hail of bullets in the early hours of October 6, 2025, yesterday. The family is now seeking answers as police investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ndima, 49, was ambushed while driving with a friend near 12th Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street in Alexandra at approximately 1:10 AM. Reports indicate that unknown assailants opened fire on their vehicle with high-caliber weapons, firing multiple shots. Approximately 40 spent cartridges were found at the scene. Ndima died at the scene, while his friend, Thabo Mahane, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Some reports indicate Mahane may have returned fire during the attack.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the incident, stating that cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

Ndima was a respected figure in Alexandra, known for his community activism and efforts to combat crime. He served as the president of the Alexandra Parliament and was involved in various initiatives aimed at improving the lives of local residents. He was also part of the “30 Strong Voices of Alex,” a group formed during the 2020 lockdown to maintain order, and helped protect local businesses during the 2021 riots. Ndima’s dedication to the community earned him the reputation of a “hero” and a “crime fighter.”

Katlego Moone, Ndima’s nephew and family spokesperson, expressed the family’s grief and shock, describing Ndima as a man of honor, pride, and integrity. He highlighted Ndima’s commitment to his family and his role as a community leader who always looked after others.

Ward 116 councillor and City of Johannesburg Chair of Chairs, Adolf Marema, suggested the killing appeared to be a targeted hit. Community activist Simon Alaska Sekhitla also expressed his heartbreak and confusion over the incident.

The Alexandra community has a history of struggling with high crime rates, including drug dealing and contact crimes. In response, community members have often taken the initiative to patrol the streets and work with the police to address these issues.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Vincent Ndima and calls for justice to be served. Police urge anyone with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stop anonymously.
