Southern Farms Mega City Project Launched in Joburg South
By Natalie Nyathi
The Southern Farms Mega City Project officially started with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 9, 2025. This major initiative, costing R27 billion, aims to address housing problems in Johannesburg South and improve the community.
Located in the Bushkoppies and Devland areas, the Mega City will cover 4,000 hectares and provide 43,000 housing units. This will help many families who have struggled with poor living conditions for years.
Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, the MMC for Human Settlements, said, “This project is about dignity. It restores faith by ensuring our residents are seen, valued, and housed decently.” Executive Mayor Cllr Dada Morero added, “Southern Farms shows that every Joburg South resident deserves dignity, opportunity, and progress.”
The Mega City is more than just homes; it is a mixed-use plan to create better communities. It will include schools, clinics, improved roads, taxi ranks, parks, sports courts, and community services like Department of Home Affairs offices and a library. This will help build a connected community that thrives for years to come.
The project will also boost the local economy. It is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and support small businesses through local contracts. Cllr Nomoya Mnisi, the MMC for Economic Development, encouraged locals—especially youth, women, and people with disabilities—to take advantage of the job opportunities. “We want to see communities not just housed but thriving,” she said.
Officials are asking the community to help protect the project from land invasions and illegal activities. Cllr Mabaso emphasized that only those on the verified housing database will receive homes, ensuring fairness in who gets a house.
In addition to housing, the project will focus on sustainability, incorporating green spaces and energy-efficient designs. Plans also include infrastructure for public transport, making it easier for residents to access jobs and services. The aim is to create a vibrant urban environment that fosters social and economic growth.
The Southern Farms Mega City Project is a significant step forward for Johannesburg’s southern area. As construction moves ahead, it promises housing, job opportunities, and a stronger sense of community. Residents are hopeful for a future where they can live with dignity and thrive in their new homes.
