MKP MPs Call for Makhubele’s Removal Amid Chaos

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) is facing fresh turmoil, as several Members of Parliament (MPs) are demanding the removal of Chief Whip Colleen Makhubele. Just weeks after her appointment, internal strife reveals ongoing divisions within the party.

In a letter to party president Jacob Zuma, dissenting MPs accuse Makhubele of poor leadership and making unilateral decisions, particularly criticizing her stance on Israel. They argue that her views betray the party’s core beliefs, which traditionally support anti-imperialist and pro-Palestinian positions.

Since taking office at the end of May, Makhubele has faced sharp criticism. Allegations suggest her leadership style has alienated party members, leading to significant rifts within the parliamentary caucus. The MPs claim her decisions have resulted in dysfunction and division, complicating the party’s efforts to present a united front.

This latest chaos is part of the MKP’s ongoing struggles with internal conflict since its formation in December 2023. Makhubele is the third person to hold the Chief Whip position in a short time, following the dismissal of Mzwanele Manyi, who was accused of arrogance and ineffective representation.

Tensions rose further when Makhubele, alongside caucus leader Dr. John Hlophe, removed Nhlamulo Ndhlela from the whippery. Hlophe has also raised concerns about the disruptive behavior of Ndhlela and Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, claiming they do not respect the authority of the Chief Whip.

Critics label Makhubele a political novice, questioning her ability to lead effectively. Her past criticisms of politicians who support Palestine have intensified fears of ideological betrayal among party members, deepening the divide within the ranks.

The MKP’s internal struggles echo the recent removal of former Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu, who faced misconduct allegations. With Makhubele’s challenges adding to the party’s instability, the call for her removal highlights ongoing chaos that threatens to further destabilize the MKP.
