A scholar transport driver was arrested earlier today after a serious crash that injured twelve schoolchildren in Montgomery Park, Randburg. The accident happened on Westpark Drive when the driver, operating a Toyota Quantum minibus, lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle.

According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the driver’s actions led to the minibus overturning, causing injuries to several young passengers. The injured children were taken to different hospitals for treatment. While details about their injuries are not yet available, the importance of road safety in transporting children has been highlighted.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. “The driver has been arrested and will be held at Sophiatown SAPS,” Fihla said. He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence.

This incident raises concerns about road safety and driver behavior when it comes to transporting children. The JMPD stresses the need for strict enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The driver is expected to appear in court soon to face the charges. As investigations continue, the JMPD urges all drivers to prioritize safety and follow traffic rules to protect vulnerable road users, especially children.

Community members are also encouraged to report any reckless driving. The safety of our children is crucial, and everyone must work together to ensure their well-being during transport. This incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with driving, especially when it involves the safety of others.
