Stanley Mathabatha has resigned from his position as the ANC Provincial Chairperson in Limpopo, effective immediately. In a letter addressed to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, dated September 1, 2025, Mathabatha expressed concerns about misconduct and a decline in ANC values within the organization. He specifically mentioned issues related to the conferences in the Vhembe and Waterberg regions as reasons for his decision.
Mathabatha said his resignation was motivated by a desire to uphold his reputation and integrity. He stated that he could not accept unethical behavior under his leadership. Despite stepping down, Mathabatha has offered to discuss these issues further with the ANC’s national leaders.
ANC spokesperson Jimmy Machaka confirmed that Mathabatha’s resignation letter is circulating on social media. However, the party has not yet verified its authenticity and will wait to comment until the leadership confirms it.
The ANC Limpopo is currently waiting for a decision from the National Executive Committee following an investigation. The party is expected to discuss findings related to the Waterberg regional conference.
Mathabatha’s resignation could have important effects on the ANC in Limpopo, given his influential role in the province. His departure may lead to changes in power dynamics and affect the party’s performance in the region.
Mathabatha served as the Premier of Limpopo from 2013 to 2024 and currently holds the position of Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development. He was elected to a third term as ANC Provincial Chairperson in June 2022.
