A tense 16-hour hostage situation in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, South Africa, culminated in a tragic murder-suicide on September 10, 2025. The incident involved a 32-year-old police constable, Thapelo Mashigo, who held his 69-year-old mother and 18-year-old nephew hostage at a house in Mamelodi East.

The ordeal began around 8:00 AM on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, stemming from what witnesses described as a family dispute. Constable Mashigo, stationed at the Boschkop Police Station and deployed to the regional Essential Infrastructure Task Team, barricaded himself inside the house with his mother and nephew.

Police, including hostage negotiators and the Tactical Response Team, were dispatched to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots earlier in the day. One of Mashigo’s nephews, a 14-year-old, managed to escape from the house.

After hours of negotiation, at approximately 11:00 PM, the hostage negotiators successfully persuaded Mashigo to release his mother. She was promptly transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

As the Special Task Force prepared to enter the house shortly before midnight, two gunshots were heard. Upon entering, officers discovered the bodies of Constable Mashigo and his 18-year-old nephew, both dead from gunshot wounds. It is unclear when the 18-year-old was shot, but officers suspect it may have been earlier in the day.

The aftermath of this incident has led to a case of murder, kidnapping, and an inquest being registered at the Mamelodi East Police Station. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been informed and will conduct an investigation.

The incident has prompted calls for increased mental health support for members of the South African Police Service. Obakeng Ramabodu, the Tshwane MMC for Environmental Management and Agriculture, who was present at the scene, emphasized the need to enhance mental health services for police officers. Police Employee Health and Wellness personnel were on scene to provide psychosocial support to the family and the constable’s colleagues.
