A devastating fire in the Steve Biko informal settlement in Etwatwa has resulted in the deaths of five family members, including both parents and their three children. The incident occurred on the night of November 9, just before midnight.
Emergency services received a call and promptly dispatched crews from the Etwatwa fire station to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a five-roomed shack—comprising three bedrooms, a kitchen, and a dining room—engulfed in flames. The situation was dire, with entrapment reported. The only survivor of this tragic fire is a teenage boy who was sleeping in an outside room a few meters away from the main house.
William Ntladi, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni disaster and emergency services, stated, “The cause of the fire is being investigated.” The scene has been handed over to South African Police Services officers for rehabilitation and removal of the deceased to appropriate pathological facilities.
The loss of five family members in this fire highlights ongoing safety concerns in informal settlements, where structures are often vulnerable to fire hazards. Local authorities are working to determine the cause of the fire and ensure that measures are in place to prevent future tragedies.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by residents in informal housing and the urgent need for improved safety measures in these communities.
