CITY OF JOBURG POSTPONES PUBLIC SWIMMING POOL OPENING
Health and safety compliance delays summer swimming season by one month
The City of Johannesburg has postponed the official opening of its public swimming pools from 1 September to 1 October 2026, citing the need to ensure all facilities meet required health, safety and operational standards before opening to the public.
The decision means residents will have to wait an additional month before diving into municipal pools, with the City adopting a phased reopening approach across its regions.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Councillor Thapelo Amad, has apologised to residents and regular pool users for the delay, acknowledging the frustration the postponement may cause.
“The City recognises the important role swimming pools play in providing affordable recreation, promoting healthy lifestyles and creating safe spaces for children, young people and communities during the warmer months,” said Amad.
He assured residents that the City is working to resolve outstanding compliance and maintenance issues over the next month to ensure facilities are safe and ready for use.
Under the phased reopening plan, 36 swimming pools are expected to open in October. The phased approach, Amad explained, is due to differences in the condition and operational requirements of facilities across the City’s regions. Some pools require more extensive maintenance and compliance work than others, necessitating a staggered opening schedule.
In a move to compensate for the delayed start to the swimming season, the City is considering extending the 2026/27 swimming season into April 2027, weather permitting and subject to operational requirements.
“An extended season would provide residents with additional access to municipal swimming facilities and partly compensate for the delayed start,” Amad said.
The City has thanked residents for their patience and understanding as it works to ensure that public recreational facilities are safe for everyone.
