Former SARS Commissioner, Passes Away at 63

Oupa Magashula, the former Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), died on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at the age of 63. He passed away after a long illness and an extended period of hospitalization.

His family released a statement on Wednesday evening, remembering him for his humility, warmth, and unwavering commitment to South Africa and its people. He was also remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, colleague, and friend.

According to family spokesperson Thebe Ikalafeng, “Oupa had been dealing with many health issues including a stroke; he also suffered several cardiac arrests.”

Magashula held senior positions in both the private and public sectors. These included roles at Telkom and South African Breweries (SAB). He later became the Commissioner of SARS.

Details regarding his funeral will be announced later.
