Limpopo is in mourning after a bus crash on the N1 highway near Makhado has claimed the lives of 40 people. Many more were injured in the accident, which happened on Sunday afternoon as the bus was traveling from Gqeberha to Harare.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye shared her condolences and confirmed that the victims included both Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals.

“Let me pass my condolences to the two countries that have lost loved ones , Zimbabwe and Malawi. We have reported 38 injuries; these are the people who are currently in hospital. They were originally 39, but a 10-month-old baby passed away after being referred to hospital,” Mathye stated.

The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated. Authorities are looking into several possible reasons, such as driver fatigue and potential mechanical issues. Mathye explained, “There was no other vehicle involved. I am sure the bus lost control. I do not know what caused it , it could be driver fatigue or a mechanical fault that made the bus lose control and go down the ditch. We will only know once the final report is completed.”

The N1 highway, which connects South Africa with its northern neighbors, was closed near Ingwe Lodge in Musina while emergency services worked at the scene. Motorists were advised to take alternative routes, causing some delays.

This tragic event highlights the need for road safety, especially on long trips. Experts suggest that drivers take regular breaks to fight fatigue, check that their vehicles are safe to drive, and follow all traffic rules.

Planning ahead is key for long journeys. This includes knowing the route, checking the weather, and identifying rest stops. Getting enough sleep before driving and taking breaks every couple of hours is important. Ensuring that the vehicle is in good shape, especially tires, brakes, and fluids, can help prevent accidents. Drivers should also stay alert, keep a safe distance from other cars, and avoid distractions. If possible, sharing driving duties can help reduce fatigue.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the families of the victims and finding ways to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
