Gauteng Police Make Significant Strides with Over 1,000 Arrests in Recent Operation Shanela

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng police have arrested more than 1,000 suspects and seized firearms during Operation Shanela, which took place from June 20 to 22, 2025.

During the operation, a total of 1,032 suspects were apprehended. Among those arrested, 78 individuals were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 786 suspects were taken into custody by detectives tracing wanted individuals.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, stated, “The suspects were handcuffed during Operation Shanela conducted across the province.” He also mentioned that the operation included arrests made at roadblocks and during raids on illegal liquor outlets.

One of the achievements of Operation Shanela was the recovery of 21 unlicensed firearms, including automatic rifles. Masondo noted, “In an effort to deal with the proliferation of firearms in Gauteng, police recovered 21 firearms, which include automatic rifles. These firearms will be taken for ballistics tests to establish if they were not used in the commission of other serious and violent crimes.”

The operation was led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the provincial police commissioner. On Saturday evening, a targeted operation in the West Rand resulted in the arrest of 79 suspects, with more than 20 charged for drunk driving. Parallel operations were also conducted in Tshwane, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Sedibeng, leading to an additional 167 arrests.

Masondo confirmed that the suspects arrested during Operation Shanela are expected to appear in various Magistrate Courts across Gauteng on Monday, June 23, 2025. Some individuals were released after paying admission of guilt fines.

Operation Shanela reflects the Gauteng police’s efforts to combat crime and enhance public safety. With significant arrests and the recovery of firearms, the operation addresses ongoing crime challenges in the province.
