Justice Clement Themba Sangoni Remembered as a ‘Humble Legal Giant’

The funeral service for former Eastern Cape Judge President Justice Clement Themba Sangoni was held yesterday, in Qokolweni, Mthatha. Various dignitaries, family members, and colleagues from the judiciary gathered to honor a prominent figure in South Africa’s legal system.
Justice Sangoni, who passed away at the age of 77 after a short illness, was celebrated for his contributions over a legal career that lasted more than 40 years. He was appointed Judge President of the Eastern Cape High Court in 2010 and served until his retirement in 2017. He was also a senior traditional leader of the Qokolweni-Zimbane Traditional Council in Mthatha.
Advocate Marumo Moerane, speaking at the service, said, “Over the past few days, many words have been spoken about the humble legal giant that we have just laid to rest. Indeed, a great tree has fallen.” His words reflected the respect and admiration held for Sangoni.
Sangoni received a special provincial official funeral, highlighting the significant impact he had on South Africa’s legal landscape.
