A tragic incident occurred in Protea Glen, Soweto, where a police captain allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, who was also a police officer, and her brother before taking his own life. This happened late on Saturday night during a birthday celebration for the captain’s girlfriend.
According to police reports, the captain called his girlfriend aside, then drew his firearm and shot her and her brother. Three other people were also injured in the shooting. Following this, the captain reportedly turned the gun on himself.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, expressed his sorrow and offered condolences to the affected families. He urged police officers to use Employee Health and Wellness facilities to deal with personal or work-related issues. Mthombeni highlighted the disappointment of seeing tools meant for protection being used to harm loved ones.
Police have opened investigations into two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and an inquest docket at the Protea police station.
This incident underscores the serious issue of domestic violence and the importance of support systems for police officers. The South African Police Service is tasked with helping victims of domestic abuse, but there have been reports of inadequate responses at police stations, showing a need for better training and support for officers.
