Jaco Pieterse, the principal of Bergview College in the Eastern Cape, has initiated legal proceedings against several politicians, alleging they made false and reckless claims that he raped a seven-year-old pupil. This follows a high-profile case that attracted national attention earlier this year.

Accompanied by AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, Pieterse filed charges of crimen injuria and violations of the Cyber Crimes and Intimidation Acts at the Sophiatown police station. The accusations come from statements made by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Fikile Mbalula, and Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had previously dropped the case against Pieterse due to insufficient evidence.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, Pieterse expressed his relief that the truth has come out, stating:

“I just want to say I am very relieved that the truth did come out… People can’t make any false and reckless statements on social media or the media.”

He described the emotional impact of the allegations on his life, noting that they have nearly destroyed both his personal and professional existence. Pieterse emphasized that the accusations have forced him to work remotely for several months.

This case has drawn significant public interest, highlighting the serious implications of defamation and the responsibilities of public figures when making accusations. Pieterse hopes to set a precedent that discourages similar actions in the future.

As legal proceedings continue, further developments in this matter are expected.
