A large-scale search is underway at Bloubergstrand Beach in Table View, Cape Town, after a 16-year-old local boy was swept out to sea by strong rip currents on Friday afternoon. The incident happened around 4:00 PM, prompting a quick response from multiple emergency services.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Melkbosstrand crew was activated after reports of two teenagers in trouble in the water. One of the boys managed to get back to shore safely, but the other was pulled further out by the strong currents.

A coordinated effort was launched, involving NSRI rescue swimmers, Big Bay Surf Lifesaving lifeguards, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, and an EMS/AMS Skymed rescue helicopter. Despite extensive searches at sea, in the air, and along the shoreline, there has been no sign of the missing teenager. The Police Water Policing and Diving Services are also involved and will keep searching.

Bloubergstrand is a popular beach known for its beautiful views of Table Mountain, but it can be dangerous due to strong waves and rip currents. These currents can pull swimmers away from the shore quickly, and they pose a serious risk, even to good swimmers.

Visitors to Bloubergstrand are urged to be very careful, especially in areas known for strong currents. It’s important to swim in designated areas and listen to lifeguards.

As the search goes on, thoughts and support are with the family of the missing teenager during this difficult time.
