The joyful atmosphere at the 30th annual Soweto Marathon was shattered on Saturday, yesterday, when a taxi driver caused serious injuries to a female runner.

This incident has upset the community and raised calls for stricter traffic laws in South Africa.

The accident happened near the intersection of Soweto Highway and Main Road/Mooki Street. Reports say the taxi driver drove through barriers to get onto the race route. A 45-year-old female runner was hit by the taxi and badly injured.

Emergency responders quickly attended to the runner. She was stabilized at the scene and taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where she is in a critical condition. Hospital staff are doing their best to care for her.

After the accident, the taxi driver, whose age is reported as either 37 or 39, tried to escape but was caught by police. Authorities believe he was drinking, and a breathalyzer test showed a reading of 0.26 mg/l, well above the legal limit of 0.10 mg/l for professional drivers in South Africa.

He has been charged with drinking and driving, reckless driving, and hit-and-run. He is due to appear in court on Monday.

The Soweto Marathon, known as “The People’s Race,” drew nearly 13,000 runners. Participants ran distances of 42.2km, 21.1km, and 10km through Soweto. The race began at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec and featured landmarks like Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial.

This incident has renewed discussions about road safety and the need for tougher penalties for reckless driving in South Africa. The Portfolio Committee on Transport is pushing for stronger laws, including jail time for drivers who break traffic rules. They want to see immediate impounding of vehicles, especially those carrying passengers over long distances.

Reckless driving means operating a vehicle without regard for safety, putting others at risk. In South Africa, penalties for reckless driving can include fines, license suspension, and even jail time, depending on how serious the offense is. Someone charged with reckless driving may also face higher insurance rates or lose their policy.

The injured runner is receiving care at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

The Soweto Marathon is an important event that brings together runners from all backgrounds. The community is in shock after the accident, and their thoughts are with the injured runner and her family. Organizers are working closely with medical teams to provide the best care possible and will share updates as they become available.
