Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket after the body of an unidentified woman, believed to be in her twenties, was found wrapped in a duvet and dumped in a dam in Moroka, Soweto, on Sunday evening.

The body was discovered at approximately 5 pm on Sunday, 20 September 2026, according to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

“The victim is estimated to be in her twenties. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage,” Nevhuhulwi said.

TENTH BODY IN TWO MONTHS

The discovery marks the tenth woman’s body found in Gauteng in recent months. Nine other bodies have been recovered in Ekurhuleni since July, sparking fears of a possible serial killer operating in the province’s east.

It remains unclear whether the Soweto discovery is linked to the Ekurhuleni cases. Police have not yet established a definitive connection.

Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili confirmed that the tenth victim has been added to the broader investigation. “Police will not rest until we get to the bottom of the killings,” she said.

POLICE APPEAL FOR INFORMATION

Police have appealed to community members with information about the incident to come forward.

SERIAL KILLER FEARS REMAIN UNCONFIRMED

Police Minister Firoz Cachalia said investigators have yet to confirm whether a serial killer is responsible for the deaths, but the possibility cannot be ruled out.

“All the cases are not necessarily linked, and there is some indication of different modus operandi and motives. But nothing yet has been excluded while investigations are ongoing,” Cachalia said.

A dedicated team of investigators, including profilers, is working to determine whether the cases are connected.
