Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo is scheduled to resume his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria today. This comes after a month-long break due to an illness that caused him to halt his testimony on October 1. The commission, led by retired judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is investigating allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within the criminal justice system.

Khumalo’s previous testimony focused on the operations of Crime Intelligence and the alleged existence of a criminal syndicate known as the “Big Five” operating primarily in Gauteng. He also faces separate fraud and corruption charges related to the appointment of Dineo Mokwele within Crime Intelligence.

During Khumalo’s absence, the commission has heard testimony from other key figures, including Hawks Divisional Commissioner Patrick Mbotho. Mbotho denied allegations that Hawks members interfered in the December 2024 arrest of Katiso “KT” Molefe, a businessman and alleged crime boss. Molefe’s arrest has become a focal point of the commission’s investigation, with allegations of interference and internal sabotage within the South African Police Service.

Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the events surrounding Molefe’s arrest at his Sandhurst mansion. The commission has heard testimony about the presence of a Gauteng Traffic Police helicopter and the arrival of Hawks officers at the scene, leading to questions about potential obstruction of the operation.

The Madlanga Commission seeks to uncover the truth behind these allegations and determine the extent of corruption and political interference within the criminal justice system. Khumalo’s reappearance is highly anticipated as he is expected to provide further insights into these complex issues. The commission was established in July 2025 by President Cyril Ramaphosa and is expected to submit its final report in November 2025.
