The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that it will be taking disciplinary measures against two of its prominent members, Malusi Gigaba and Senzo Mchunu, following their recent public statements that the party deems damaging and divisive. The ANC’s National Spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu, issued a statement on August 18, 2025, expressing the party’s serious concern and disapproval of the comments made by Gigaba and Mchunu.

The ANC contends that Gigaba and Mchunu acted outside the sanctioned organizational mandate, making pronouncements that deliberately undermine the party. Bhengu emphasized that the ANC rejects these views, considering them an opportunistic assault on the party’s image, credibility, and unity. The party views their actions as a violation of internal communication protocols and a breach of the fundamental discipline expected of its members.

The disciplinary action follows comments made by Gigaba, in which he stated that the ANC “will be history” if it does not win municipalities in the upcoming local government elections. Speaking at a tombstone unveiling in KwaZulu-Natal, Mchunu echoed these concerns, suggesting the ANC is on the brink of collapse.

Bhengu stated that Gigaba and Mchunu are casting aspersions on the character and unity of the ANC, portraying the organization as divided, incoherent, and collapsing. The ANC believes that such statements sow discord, weaken public confidence, and embolden forces seeking to reverse the gains of the revolution.

The ANC has emphasized that communication within the party is the constitutional mandate of the Secretary-General, with powers entrusted to the National Spokesperson for operational purposes. Any deviation from this protocol undermines internal cohesion, unity, and renewal.

The ANC has made it clear that no member, regardless of their history or standing, is exempt from organizational discipline. The party is committed to taking the necessary steps to correct this behavior, demanding unity, discipline, and revolutionary morality from all its members. As the ANC advances its program of renewal, it is intensifying efforts to serve the people with humility and dignity, making it clear that ill-discipline will not be tolerated.
