Five suspects linked to the deadly tavern shooting in Bekkersdal are appearing in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court today, following a postponement yesterday for legal aid applications.
The shooting, which occurred on December 21, 2025, at the KwaNoxolo tavern, resulted in the deaths of nine people and left ten others wounded.
The five suspects face a range of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and contravention of the Immigration Act. One of the suspects has a previous conviction for attempted murder. According to reports, all five men who appear in court are Lesotho nationals.
Initially, reports indicated that eleven suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting. However, only five appear in court. It remains unclear why the other six suspects did not appear and what charges they may face.
Residents of Bekkersdal express dissatisfaction, particularly after being excluded from the court proceedings due to concerns that their presence might jeopardize an upcoming identity parade. The community grapples with fear and anxiety despite increased police presence in the area.
The Bekkersdal tavern shooting is one of several mass shootings that have occurred in Gauteng province in recent weeks.
The local municipality has called for the intervention of the South African Defence Force to address the surge in violent crime.
The case against the five suspects is ongoing, and they are expected to remain in custody while investigations continue.
The National Prosecuting Authority will conduct an identity parade and profiling. The tavern owner, Nanesi Matwa, who faces charges related to operating with a fraudulent liquor license, is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
