Fearless South African Political Journalist Tshidi Madia Makes Country Proud

By Natalie Nyathi

On May 21, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had a tense meeting about the treatment of farmers in South Africa. Journalist Tshidi Madia was there to cover the event and share important insights.

What started as a diplomatic talk quickly turned into a confrontation. Trump repeated his claims of “white genocide” and showed misleading videos about farm violence.

Trump presented a video featuring Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), using old protest images that did not accurately represent the situation.

Madia pointed out that official crime statistics showed only 12 out of nearly 10,000 murders from October to December 2024 were related to farm attacks, and most victims were Black.

Ramaphosa defended South Africa, highlighting that white delegates were present and that Malema’s views do not reflect the government’s stance. His calmness contrasted sharply with Trump’s aggressive tone.

Ramaphosa referenced Nelson Mandela’s message of unity to stress the importance of understanding during such divisive discussions.

The meeting also came after the U.S. granted asylum to 59 white South Africans, which Ramaphosa criticized, adding more tension to the talks.

Malema mocked the meeting on social media, complicating the situation further.

Tshidi Madia played a key role in this discussion, highlighting the need for accurate reporting. Her insights are vital for understanding how South Africa is viewed globally. As the country faces complex issues, journalists like Madia are essential in advocating for truth and clarity.
