Kenny Kunene, a leader in the Patriotic Alliance, is back as the MMC for Transport in Johannesburg. This decision follows tough negotiations between the PA and the ANC, the main party governing the city.

Johannesburg is a major city, and its management relies on different political parties working together in a coalition. Kunene’s return highlights the fragile nature of these partnerships.

The situation took a turn in July 2025 when Kunene was found at the home of a man accused of murder, leading to police involvement and raising questions about his associations. Due to the controversy surrounding this incident, Kunene stepped down from his role as MMC for Transport. The PA conducted an investigation and concluded that Kunene did not engage in any wrongdoing. However, the matter led to significant pressure within the coalition.

Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the PA, insisted on Kunene’s reinstatement, stating that the PA would withdraw from the coalition if this did not happen. To prevent the coalition from collapsing, the ANC ultimately agreed to reinstate Kunene, recognizing the need to maintain unity in governance.

Now back in charge of transport in Johannesburg, Kunene faces major challenges. The city struggles with a backlog of road repairs, particularly potholes, and traffic congestion. Moreover, ensuring that public transport is safe and affordable remains a pressing issue. The city has allocated funds for road improvements, and Kunene has expressed his commitment to enhancing transport services.

Kunene’s reinstatement not only stabilizes the coalition in Johannesburg but also underscores the complexities of managing a city where various political factions must collaborate effectively.
