Mbalula Accuses Zuma of Betraying ANC Values in Morocco Visit

The African National Congress (ANC) is in a dispute with former President Jacob Zuma over his recent visit to Morocco, where he showed support for Morocco’s plan regarding Western Sahara. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has criticized Zuma, saying he misused the South African flag and misled the international community.
Mbalula’s comments came after Zuma met with the Moroccan government, where the South African flag was displayed. The ANC argues that Zuma, representing the MK party, does not speak for the elected government of South Africa, and his actions could harm the country’s reputation. The South African government is seeking clarification from Morocco about the flag’s use in this context.
“Jacob Zuma represents everything that is wrong,” Mbalula said. “The ANC will stand with the Sahrawi people for their self-determination. Morocco must end its occupation of Western Sahara. Zuma is no savior; he is a sell-out.”
The issue arises from Zuma’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, which goes against the ANC’s long-standing policy of supporting the Polisario Front’s call for self-determination in Western Sahara. The ANC has traditionally opposed colonialism and supported African nations’ rights to self-govern.
Mbalula expressed that he was not surprised by Zuma’s stance, pointing out that Zuma has weakened the ANC for his own benefit and will be remembered for it. The ANC has accused him of betraying the party’s values.
During his visit, Zuma emphasized the need for a practical African approach to the Western Sahara issue. He claimed that his party, MK, recognizes Morocco’s historical claims and believes that the autonomy proposal balances governance with Moroccan sovereignty.
The controversy comes as the ANC faces challenges, particularly in the Western Cape, where it lost control to the Democratic Alliance in 2009.
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged party members to reconnect with communities ahead of future elections. The ANC is also dealing with allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave during an investigation.
