R1.7 Billion Recovery, A Major Step Against Mismanagement

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has recovered R1.7 billion for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This money was unallocated between 2016 and 2021 and was meant for students who qualified for financial aid but changed schools or deregistered.
The recovery shows the need for better control of public funds. The SIU found that NSFAS had weak systems, which allowed these unspent funds to pile up. By working with universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, the SIU managed to reclaim a large part of this money, including significant amounts from the University of Witwatersrand and the University of the Free State.
The SIU is also collecting money from over a thousand unqualified NSFAS beneficiaries who agreed to pay back what they owed. This effort is important to make sure funds are used properly.
With the recovered R1.7 billion now going to support students in need, the SIU’s work helps improve NSFAS. By fixing past issues, the SIU is making it easier for more disadvantaged students to get financial aid and pursue higher education.
