Urgent Talks Between South Africa and Zimbabwe Over Undocumented Minors

South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has initiated urgent discussions with the Zimbabwean government in response to a significant rise in undocumented minors intercepted at the Beitbridge border. This meeting, scheduled for the next two days, aims to address child safety and illegal crossings.
Recently, authorities intercepted more than 50 undocumented minors, including 33 children aged four to 15 on January 13. This followed an earlier incident involving 20 children traveling without guardians. Two Zimbabwean men have been arrested for allegedly facilitating these crossings.
The BMA has raised concerns about the risks these minors face, with Commissioner Michael Masiapato stating, “All minor children were handed over to the Department of Social Development.” The focus of the talks will be on ensuring safer, legal crossings for children and establishing compliance measures for parents and transporters.
As the meeting approaches, the priority remains on safeguarding children’s rights and enhancing cross-border cooperation to address the challenges posed by undocumented minors.
