Five students have been arrested following a fire at Thuto-Lefa Secondary School in Munsieville, Krugersdorp, where two mobile classrooms were destroyed. The South African Police Service is investigating the incident as a case of arson, with initial findings suggesting that the fire was started deliberately in response to recent changes in the school timetable.

The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from the Gauteng Department of Education. MEC Matome Chiloane strongly denounced the destruction of school property, emphasizing that such actions are criminal and will not be tolerated. “Burning a classroom is not a form of protest; it is a criminal act that robs learners of their right to quality education,” Chiloane stated.

The arrested students include four Grade 10 learners and one Grade 9 learner. Authorities are currently working to determine the exact roles each student played in the incident and whether other individuals were involved. The South African Police Service has launched a formal investigation, and the students will face serious charges related to arson and damage to property.

Arson is considered a serious crime in South Africa, with potential penalties including lengthy prison sentences, especially if the act endangers lives or results in significant property damage. The legal system classifies arson as intentionally and unlawfully setting fire to the immovable property of another, such as buildings, with an element of danger to the community.

The Gauteng Department of Education has assured the community that efforts are underway to minimize disruptions to teaching and learning and to ensure the safety of the school environment.
