Key Foundations Withdraw from National Dialogue, ActionSA Reconsiders Participation

Several key foundations representing prominent South African leaders have announced their withdrawal from the upcoming National Dialogue, raising concerns about the event’s direction. The foundations, including the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, cited reasons such as rushed processes and a lack of clear budget as key factors in their decision.
In a joint statement, the foundations expressed regret over stepping back from what was intended to be a citizen-led initiative. They argued that the dialogue has shifted to being controlled by the government, undermining its credibility and the original goal of inclusivity. The foundations emphasized that without proper citizen leadership, the dialogue risks becoming a symbolic event rather than a meaningful platform for real discussions.
Following this withdrawal, ActionSA, a significant opposition party, is now rethinking its participation in the National Dialogue. Party leader Herman Mashaba stated that they cannot support a process that appears to be directed by the government without genuine reforms. ActionSA voiced concerns that the dialogue may turn into a mere exercise in public relations rather than a platform for real change.
The foundations also highlighted issues like the lack of financial infrastructure and the hurried timeline, which they feel limit the potential for meaningful engagement. They proposed rescheduling the dialogue to allow for adequate preparation and a return to its citizen-led roots.
As these developments unfold, the credibility of the National Dialogue is being called into question. Originally announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa as a platform for discussing critical issues such as inequality and unemployment, the event now faces scrutiny over its ability to deliver substantive outcomes.
With ActionSA reconsidering its involvement, the future of the National Dialogue remains uncertain, prompting calls for a reevaluation of its structure and goals to ensure it truly serves the interests of all South Africans.
