Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale is set to appear as a key witness at the ongoing Ad Hoc Committee hearings in Parliament today. His testimony will focus on allegations of political interference and infiltration within South Africa’s criminal justice system, a topic of pressing concern amid ongoing investigations into police corruption.

Mathale has served as Deputy Police Minister since 2019, stepping in under both former Minister Bheki Cele and the current Minister Senzo Mchunu. His long tenure in this role positions him uniquely to provide insights into the inner workings of the police and the challenges posed by political influence.

Mathale’s appearance comes just days after Bheki Cele testified before the committee. Cele highlighted the serious issues facing South Africa’s law enforcement, stating, “South Africa is under siege when it comes to this drug.” His frank comments have set the stage for further scrutiny of the government’s handling of crime and corruption.

During his testimony, Mathale will likely face intense questioning from committee members and evidence leaders, including Advocate Norman Arendse. They will seek to understand not only his awareness of directives that may have impacted the operations of the police, particularly related to the controversial disbandment of the political killings task team. This team was formed to address rising political violence, and its dismantling has raised eyebrows among lawmakers and the public alike.

These hearings are critical in shedding light on the integrity of South Africa’s criminal justice system, especially as public trust in law enforcement is being tested. The committee aims to uncover the extent of political influence on police operations and ensure accountability in the fight against crime.
