A major drug bust occurred on Tuesday evening in Blue Hills, Midrand, where police seized R20 million worth of cocaine and arrested a 56-year-old man. The operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team, including members from the SAPS Crime Intelligence Head Office, the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit, the Johannesburg K9 Unit, and the Local Criminal Record Centre.

According to SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the police acted on reliable intelligence about a suspected drug storage site. “Our intelligence officers had been monitoring this operation for some time. Acting swiftly on the information, our team was able to intercept and seize a large consignment of cocaine before it could reach the streets,” Mathe said.

The seized drugs weighed approximately 80 kilograms and were found hidden in a storage room on the property. Preliminary investigations suggest that the cocaine was smuggled into South Africa from a neighboring country and was intended for distribution in Cape Town.

Mathe emphasized the significance of this operation in the broader fight against drug trafficking. “This seizure is a clear indication that we are closing in on organised crime syndicates. These substances destroy lives and communities, and we are determined to stop them at the source,” she stated.

The arrested suspect, believed to be the owner of the plot, is expected to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court this week. He will face charges related to the possession and dealing of drugs.

Recent reports have identified various international and local drug kingpins operating within the country, with cocaine often sourced from South America and trafficked through various African nations before reaching South Africa. The main entry points for these drugs include international airports and seaports, where traffickers use various methods, including human couriers.
