A hijacking attempt during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg has raised concerns about security at important international events. On the evening of November 21, 2025, (Friday) a carjacker targeted a vehicle assigned for the summit, which was carrying members of the South African Police Service’s National Intervention Unit (NIU).
The incident happened on Empire Road while the NIU was on patrol to ensure safety during the summit. The alleged hijacker jumped into the road, pointing what looked like a firearm at the driver. Unbeknownst to him, the vehicle was occupied by police officers. One of the officers quickly fired a shot, injuring the suspect in the upper body.
Later, it was discovered that the weapon used by the hijacker was a replica firearm. Even though it wasn’t real, pointing it at someone is still a serious crime in South Africa, especially when used to commit another crime. The suspect was taken to the hospital under police guard and will face charges of attempted hijacking once he is well enough to appear in court.
This incident highlights the strong security measures in place for the G20 Summit, which involves world leaders and important officials. The National Joint Operations and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has assured everyone that police are ready to respond to any threats. They noted that this incident serves as a warning to anyone thinking of committing a crime.
The G20 Summit, themed “A Fair and Just Future for All,” has drawn attention for both its discussions and the heavy security around it. Major events like this often see an increase in risks related to safety, which requires more policing and community cooperation.
Officials have stressed that the safety of all attendees and the general public is a top priority. They view this incident as an important reminder of the need for collaboration between law enforcement and the community to keep the summit safe.
While this hijacking attempt was a serious threat, it also shows the readiness and quick response of the police in handling such situations. Authorities are committed to making sure that the G20 Summit runs smoothly, sending a clear message that crime won’t be tolerated, especially during such significant events.
